Voluntary Biodiversity Gain, North Yorkshire

2 minutes read

The Challenge/Opportunity

A beautiful site on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, extending to 110Ha. The landowner was interested in increasing the floral diversity by moving to a lower input, lower output grazing model but also needed to make it financially viable to do so.

Our Solution

  • Propose the site for a voluntary biodiversity gain programme, run by a major UK business.
  • Work with the landowner to identify priority areas for their potential biodiversity gain.
  • Survey priority areas using UKHab methodology with additional botanical survey.
  • Calculate the potential biodiversity gain using a modified version of the Defra metric.
  • We entered into a contract with the biodiversity gain buyer to deliver the units and entered a corresponding contract and covenant with the landowner.
  • We worked with the landowner to set a detailed restoration and management plan which will see the site managed as hay meadow.

The benefits

Our solution allows us to continue to work with the landowner, with annual advisory and monitoring visits.

The landowner has access to ongoing, expert advice and guidance as they move to a more environmentally and economically sustainable approach to land management.

The buyer is assured by annual reports on the progress against their own targets. We monitor changes in floral diversity and abundance, which continues to develop our own knowledge of the site and the effect of the solution we put in place..

We want to work with you in partnership for the long term, this way we can achieve more for our partners and for plants and fungi.
