Course Overview
75% of the lichen species that the UK has an international responsbility to conserve are found in our temperate rainforest but identifying them can be a daunting prospect. This course will give you the confidence to start to identify communities and species of lichens that help us to understand the condition of rainforest sites. Depending on the needs and experience of participants, this course can be delivered over 1 or 2 days, in person and online.
The course will cover:
- What lichens are and why they are important
- Key lichen features for identification including growth forms and reproductive features
- Identification of some common rainforest species
- Rainforest indicator species
Learning outcomes:
Through this training you will:
- Understand the significance of lichens in temperate rainforest
- Know what a lichen is and be able to describe and identify their key identification features
- Confidently be able to identify a number of common species using simple identification guides
- Be able to recognise some rainforest indicator species and niches
