Challenge/Opportunity
To help the landowner realise their vision of a nature rich, multi-functional landscape on this 120ha hill farm in mid-Wales, whilst remaining true to the traditions of Welsh hill farming.
Our Solution
We identified the current biodiversity value of the site using the Rapid Grassland Assessment methodology -, this involves gathering data from 20 points (quadrats) in each land parcel and identifying the presence of positive and negative indicator species. The data gathered wereas complemented by fungal eDNA assessment and an invertebrate survey, undertaken by a skilled and trusted sub-contractor.
With the information from the survey, we worked with the landowner and tenant grazers to identify high priority areas for grassland restoration. These were the areas with the best existing biodiversity value where their restoration could best complement farming practices.
We then made management recommendations for:
- Grassland management in the areas with highest biodiversity potential including cutting and grazing regimes
- Green hay strewing on two fields with the intention that these create a seed source for restoration of other fields
- Stocking density and breed recommendations for the areas to be used primarily for agriculture to maximise their biodiversity potential alongside farming
The Benefits
Our recommendations enabled the landowner to achieve their vision for the estate by allowing nature to recover, without compromising the farming which had taken place over generations. We are now working long term with this estate providing ongoing support and advice.
